[Yes. Now. It was important to him! Especially when both Gokudera and Rei were important to him.]

Ah...What happened?

[He didn't give any precursor as to what Rei said. He wanted to hear it all from Gokudera's point of view. Rei said he had asked politely, but though he trusted Rei, he didn't quite believe that.]

Does it matter? He was an asshole, I avoid him, it's dealt with. [Gokudera really doesn't want to bring Makoto into it. As far as he's concerned, they can go on disliking each other and still have the same mutual friends. Gokudera does that with a lot of people back home!]

[Makoto let out a sigh. Again, he was reminded of how he and Rei were pretty similar. It was even difficult to get Rei to talk about it.]

Okay...if you say so.

I'd just like to talk about either one of you without the other getting mad, is all.

You're both really passionate and kind people. You both just saw...the rougher sides of each other. If he saw what I see now, he'd have another opinion.

I don't care what he thinks of me.

[The words have something of a bitter bite to them - Gokudera is used to not being liked on sight. So maybe Rei and his instant starting off on the wrong foot brought up unpleasant memories for him. Gokudera looks away, frowning slightly.]

He's not the one I'm dating.

[He watched Gokudera's face and payed attention to the way he spoke and the tone that he used. He watched how he moved and Makoto's own face became sympathetic.

There was always a reason that people became the way they did through life. He knew that GOkudera didn't start off as a street-talking, smoking, hitman.

He just nodded and left it at that. He wasn't the kind of person that pried or poked and prodded.]

All right...

[He just continued eating his food which didn't take long for him to finish.]

[Gokudera wasn't going to open up without at least one of those. The fight didn't involve Makoto in any way, in his mind. It wasn't with him, and it wasn't about him, and with Rei also being his friend it would be unforgivable to 'put Makoto in the middle of it'.

He was used to being disliked, to having people he didn't get along with but he had to work in close quarters with. For him, it wasn't a problem.

Even so, his mood had noticeably turned darker. He finished the rest of his food in silence, unsure of what to say until he noticed Makoto was done as well.]

Here, I can clean up.

[He stood, already starting to get the plates.]

[And now he felt terrible about bringing it up. He didn't like to see Gokudera in such a terrible mood. He stood up with Gokudera and helped him with the glasses.

He placed them into the sink and waited for Gokudera to do the same before taking the other's hand and holding it firmly. His face was determined, not unlike what Gokudera had seen when they first shared a real kiss.]

Hayato...

You are loyal, compassionate, diligent, and caring. I like to see you smile and get excited about things.

[His expression then became gentle again.]
I don't want to see you going into dark places in that smart head of yours, okay? I'm sorry that I brought that sort of thing up.

I guess I want him to see what I see in you so that I can show you off and show how proud I am to have someone like you by my side. It's selfish, isn't it? But I'm really happy to have you as my boyfriend.

[Damn that Makoto. He had a way of getting around all of Gokudera's defenses. As far as those were concerned, Makoto was like Tsuna and Yamamoto all wrapped up in one. A dangerous combination.]

... I was just smoking outside your place because I was nervous to meet your friends and that dickface comes out all 'smoking is a filthy, disgusting habit' like he's the goddamn Queen of England or something, and I snapped at him before I thought about it.

[Gokudera sighs, looking down at Makoto's hands holding his own. He squeezed them in return.]

Once I realized he was one of your friends I felt like such an idiot... and I really wanted to apologize and try to get back to good, but - christ every time he opened his mouth it was like he got more and more demeaning and pretentious like he was fucking better than me and it just kept setting me off...!

[He didn't expect Gokudera to come out and say it, but he wasn't complaining that he had. It all made sense now. So he was right in thinking that it wasn't so polite.

He nodded his head in understanding and sorted out the pieces.

Rei insulted Gokudera, Gokudera insulted Rei. Rei was defending his health, while Gokudera was defending himself. Gokudera felt like he was being talked down to while Rei felt like he was being targeted.

They were totally on the same page on different sides.]

I get it now...

It makes a lot of sense...

Both of your prides were hurt.

[Gokudera huffed slightly, blushing again as well. He really hadn't wanted to bring this up...]

I'm surprised his pride even felt that as an injury, he certainly seems like he has enough of it. Anyway, it doesn't matter to me.

Sometimes people with the biggest prides feel it the most since their pride is their pride.

[He reached out, placed a hand onto his head, then brought Gokudera closer to give him a peck on the forehead.]

Thanks for telling me, though.

[Since Makoto pulled him closer for that anyway, Gokudera leans against the other boy. Huff. But he's not really grumpy anymore. No more so than his usual level of it.]

Guess that makes sense.

[He strokes his back gently.]

No need to worry. I think the two of you will be fine. I believe in you.

I don't think its a big deal. [But he will take the sympathy back rubs anyway.]

[Little did he know, "fine" wouldn't be for a loooooong time. LOOKIN' AT THAT THREAD BELOW]

Let's finish up the dishes and go sit down somewhere.

[With a gentle pat on the back, he starts to wash.]

Want to dry?

[Gokudera's version of 'fine' involves them keeping a respectful distance from each other, it isn't his fault if someone tries to start shit!]

We can go up to my room or... I think there's a sitting room or something.

[In any case, he grabbed a towel to start drying.]

Whichever you want is all right with me.

[He started humming a bit as he washed the few dishes. It sounded like a kid's tune. Ren and Ran's children's shows were to thank for that.]

I'd rather hang out in my room. Er! Because, less chance of Mukuro or his boyfriend, you know, walking by - uh, you know.

[JUST SHUT UP GOKUDERA JUST SHUT UP. He sighs deeply, then pauses as he listens to Makoto's upbeat humming.] ... What song is that?

Y-Yeah...That's a good idea...

[He didn't want Mukuro walking by and then heckling them for catching them while they kiss.

He paused and looked over to Gokudera, then let out an embarrassed chuckle.]

It's a song that Ren and Ran liked. It goes...

[He even knows the hand gestures to it.]

[Gokudera's own childhood (as if he wasn't still technically in it) was an ocean away, and he's not exactly on the best terms with those in the group that would watch that kinda thing. Even so, he watches Makoto go through the song, a smile slowly spreading across his face and a soft laugh spilling from his lips. His smile is so warm and fond now, a stark contrast to his earlier grumpiness. Dere dere around Makoto, indeed.]

That's adorable.

[His own smile grows when he hears a laugh come from him. That was more like it. He knew that grumpy was Gokudera's main state of being, but he liked to see him smile and laugh far more.]

Ah! I got Hayato to laugh. It's a rare treat.

[He teased him gently.]

[Hayato blushed, putting the dried dishes away. And after a soak, even the pan was saved!] It's not that rare. [Trying so hard to go back to his 'cool' and grumpy self again. But it's hard around Makoto. He keeps looking at the other boy out of the corner of his eye, and can't help but smile a little bit...]

[Makoto watched him before getting a glint in his eye.]

You're trying to act cool again, but how well can you do...

[Aaaand then he swoops to pick him up bridal style!]

[Gokudera lets out an ABSOLUTELY UNDIGNIFIED SQUACK and flails before holding tight to Makoto's shoulders to keep from falling.]

P-PUT ME DOWN!

[His face has literally never been redder than it is at this moment. It's even spreading down his neck and under his shirt collar.]

[Makoto let out a playful laugh.]

Put you down? But the kitchen is no place to put you down. We'll have to go somewhere else!

[So he started walking out of the kitchen and into the main hallway.]
